The Antarctic Peninsula
The author spent two summer field seasons in the Antarctic Peninsula performing the fieldwork for his PhD; 1975 to 1976 and 1976 to 1977. When he returned to the UK, he researched the materials he had collected in Antarctica at Aston University in England and was awarded his PhD, “The Metalliferous Mineralization in the Western Antarctic Peninsula” in 1979. Many of the localities shown in the photographs below are mentioned in the novels. All of the photographs were taken by the author himself during his visits to the Antarctic Peninsula. Some of the geographic locations and national bases he visited in 1975-1976 included: South Shetland Islands – King George Island, Livingstone Island, Nelson Island, Greenwich Island, Robert Island, Half Moon Island. National Bases – Keller Peninsula (UK), Prospect Point (UK), Palmer Station (USA), Bellinghausen (USSR), Base Frei (Chile).
In 1975 the author spent Christmas Day at Base Frei. And in 1976 he spent New Year’s Day at Bellinghausen Base. Both bases are on Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, South Shetlands.Antarctic
