Tibet and Buddhism

Seeing Mt. Qomolangma (Everest) from the base camp at an altitude of five thousand two hundred meters was awe inspiring.

The author stayed in the Rongpu Monastery overnight below the Qomolangma base camp. Most noteworthy was the fact that the Tibetan people there were very hospitable and courteous, but the conditions in the monastery dormitory were somewhat basic.

Food can be an issue for Westerners because it can be very spicy with lost of sun-dried chilli in particular.  Also, Westerners are used to wheat bread that contains many additives and is finely ground, whereas in Tibet the local bread is made from barley, which is very granular.

However, the temples are also awe inspiring. Many of the iconic statues of the Buddha, Bodhisattva’s and past Lamas are covered in gold and precious gem stones. For example, one Stupa in the Potala Palace (in which the cremated bodies of the past Dali Lamas are buried) was coated with almost four tons of gold and encrusted with diamonds and rubies.
